About Us

The Friends of Woking Palace is a registered charity whose objects are the preservation and protection, upkeep and maintenance of Woking Palace, and the advancement of education of the public in the history of the Palace site.

The Charity is administered by an Executive Committee consisting of up to nine members including two nominated coporate members and the balance being elected at the Annual General Meeting which is held in September each year or as soon as practicable thereafter.

The corporate members represent Woking Borough Council, the owners of Woking Palace, and the Lightbox, the repository for archaeological artefacts from the site.

A Tudor Palace Revealed

In 2007 we received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to fund our project entitled "A Tudor Palace Revealed". The aim of this project is to improve the presentation of Woking Palace and the advancement of education of the public in it's history. More

Achievements

Since our formation in 2003, The Friends of Woking Palace have made a number of improvements to the presentation and to the historical knowledge of the site.

  • We commissioned an archaeological artist to create an image of how the Palace would have looked in Tudor times. More
  • We commissioned a report into the provenance of tile fragments found during a diving operations in the river Wey adjoing the site. This was achieved with finanical support from Surrey Archaeological Society, the Council for British Archaeology in the South East and Awards for All South East. More
  • We purchased three noticeboards for the site, used to aid visitors to interpret this historical monument. One has been placed at the entrance to the site to showing the lay out and another just inside the copse explaining what is involved in the coppicing regime presently being implemented by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. The third is sited just behind the low wall at the front of the King’s Hall

Tours and Presentations

The Friends run Open Days on three weekends every year. We organise them; put together the displays; and offer tours and information about the Palace through-out the three events.

We also give presentations to local groups and societies. Please contact us, info @ woking-palace.org, if you would like to know more.
