Archaeology at Woking Palace

The Woking Palace Archaeological Project 2011 has now finished.

There will be a lecture by Rob Poulton at 3pm on 19th November at the Surrey History Centre when members of the public will have a chance to hear more about the developing interpretation of this special site. Please see the Surrey History Centre website for more details.

The Woking Palace Archaeological Project, jointly funded by Surrey County Council, Woking Borough Council and Surrey Archaeological Society and supported by in-kind contributions from Quest (of Reading University), ASE (University of London), University of Nottingham, Surrey Archaeological Society and the Friends of Woking Palace, has been set up to learn more about this nationally important medieval site. Discoveries during 2009 and 2010 include evidence of an early manor house, of pre-Tudor kitchens,and more of the rare 15th century Valencian tiles that have so far been found in few places in Britain other than Woking Palace. 2011 was be the third and final season of excavations with digging taking place during the period from 13th July to 29th July. An Open Day was held on Sunday 31st July to allow the public to see what is discovered by this year’s excavations through guided tours which ran from 11am to 4pm. Local heritage groups were also be on hand with displays
