Friends of Woking Palace

Presentation

There is a need to provide something more than an opportunity just to look around the grounds and the remains of Henry VIII’s royal palace. We have, therefore been looking at ways in which we can better present and interpret the monument. We are somewhat restricted in how we can do this by the terms on which the Borough Council originally acquired the site, the restrictions imposed by English Heritage on what can be done regarding the ancient monument and alas, the exposure that any remote site has to vandalism.

Three display boards have been purchased. One has been placed at the entrance to the site to showing the lay out and another just inside the copse explaining what is involved in the coppicing regime presently being implemented by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. The third is sited just behind the low wall at the front of the King’s Hall.

Some of the foundations of the Palace are now marked out with flags for Open Days. In addition, a hand out entitled A Walk round the Palace site has been drawn up enabling visitors to find their way around the site.

The Friends have commissioned an artist’s impression how the Palace would have looked in Tudor  times. Click Reconstruction to see this.

Tree and undergrowth removal

In an attempt to improve the appearance of the site a certain amount of tree work has been undertaken involving the removal of elder and hawthorn in the area of the Queen’s Lodgings to the south east of the barrel vault
