Heritage Open Days, 11th and 12th September 2010

Friends guide visitors around Woking Palace

The Friends of Woking Palace welcomed over 800 people to the site this weekend, when it opened as part of Heritage Open Days. As well as touring the remains of what was once a Tudor Palace, the visitors were able to learn more about what has been discovered about the site’s long history through on-going historical and archaeological research. For many the highlights of the visit were the talks and flying demonstrations by Raphael Falconry. These not only showcased the magnificent birds but explained the essential part falconry played in medieval and Tudor life.

When asked about the weekend Jean Follett, Honorary Treasurer of the Friends of Woking Palace who organised the two Open Days on the site, said “It was an absolutely fantastic weekend with such a large number of people able to enjoy the Palace site, many of whom had not realised that Woking once had a Palace. The falconry was better than brilliant as I learnt a lot more about falconry in Tudor times and from a personal point of view it was particularly special as during one of the displays a beautiful kestrel literally dropped in to have a rest on my shoulder! What a privilege and thanks to a couple of kind visitors I also have photos to remind me of that moment. I hope that many of the visitors we had over the weekend will feel inspired to join the Friends and help us let others share in this fabulous site. We are all volunteers and we always more need help with the Open Days and with keeping the site maintained throughout the year.”

The 2011 Open Days are now being planned for three weekends one in May, one in July and the last in September.
